This is a slightly abbreviated version of a long nazm. In some places, the poet uses her as a symbol of India, under British occupation. This is an ode to lakshmi, the hindu godess of prosperity. He wrote about hindu religious themes also and moved easily and rhythmically between chaste urdu/farsi and hindi/khaRi boli.
